Case Study #2. Drawing a PFD for the Claus Process

Case Study #2 Claus Process

  • Let’s use Steps shown before to Draw a PFD.
  • Process Description - Claus Process
    • The Claus process is a key method for converting hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas into elemental sulfur.
    • It is widely used in refineries and natural gas processing plants to recover sulfur from H₂S-containing gas streams.
    • Here is a step-by-step explanation of the Claus process:

Summary Process Steps:

    • Feed Gas Preparation:
      • Removing impurities from the feed gas.
    • Thermal Stage:
      • Partial combustion of H₂S to form SO₂ and elemental sulfur in the Claus furnace.
    • Waste Heat Recovery:
      • Cooling the gas and recovering heat as steam.
    • Sulfur Condensation:
      • Removing condensed sulfur in the first condenser.
    • Catalytic Stages:
      • Further conversion of H₂S and SO₂ to sulfur in catalytic reactors with inter-stage condensation.
    • Tail Gas Treatment:
      • Treating the tail gas to minimize sulfur emissions.
